The voice of influence: inspiring song lyrics for marketers

At the impressionable age of 13, Alanis Morissette taught me, “You live, you learn; you love, you learn; you cry, you learn; you loooooose, you learn.” I’d be willing to bet that almost everyone has learned from song lyrics. Lyrics to songs that grab a hold of us and don’t let go can inspire choices we make in both our personal and professional lives.

From the big picture strategy to the minuscule details of a task, marketing is a series of ideas. And ideas are all around us, we just have to look for them. Music and song lyrics are one of many avenues. So turn up your speakers and check out these thought-provoking lyrics gathered from our team.

  1. “Now learn from your mother, or spend your days biting your own neck.”  (Little Lion Man, by Mumford and Sons)

Take every opportunity to learn from the pros. We dig deep to learn about each of our clients so we can effectively market them, and in turn, they learn a bit about marketing from us. This extends to mentoring in the workplace, soaking up professional development opportunities, and staying current with the latest industry developments. If you take the time to learn how to do things right from the people who teach from experience, you will reap the benefits. Your mother will be proud.

  1. “All the thoughts you never see; you are always thinking.” (Unthought Known, by Pearl Jam)

Work doesn’t start at 8 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. Ideas can transpire at any unreasonable hour. If you are passionate about what you do, you are always thinking about it – some thoughts may never be seen or heard, but it’s those thoughts that may lead to bigger, better ones. This ripple effect can result in that lasting idea that really makes an impact.

  1. “The space between your heart and mine is the space we will fill with time.” (Space Between, by Dave Mathews Band)

Making a connection with your key audience is vital – and finding that emotional connection can build strong relationships… or spell c-o-n-v-e-r-s-i-o-n over and over. Storytelling through words, design, and ideas establishes this connection. It redefines marketing from the standardized “what” you do to “why” you do it, which is where every marketer should start.

  1. “Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run there’s still time to change the road you’re on. And it makes me wonder.” (Stairway to Heaven, by Led Zeppelin)

Choices abound, and it’s never too late to make the right decision. Doing what’s best for our clients, even if it means changing the course of action we were following, is what we live and breathe. It’s never too late to improve, strive to stand out from your competitors, and tell your story the way you want it to be told. The path may have some bumps, but which choice will elicit the most optimal results? Sometimes hard decisions are the best decisions.

There are opportunities to learn or gain inspiration everywhere – reach out and grab them. Now excuse me while I turn up the volume.
